Early-in-the-tour Chicago stop for Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, promoting their latest album “Hypnotic Eye.” I’ve always felt that he predictably puts on a good-but-not-great performance, and last night was no exception. The band hit their marks but I felt like overall the energy was somewhat lacking. The setlist was pretty good, however — three inspired covers (including the Paul Revere & The Raiders/Monkees classic “I’m Not Your Stepping Stone”) and a healthy dose of solid material from their current album, all building to a set that ran slightly over two hours. Fans of this band didn’t go home disappointed.
This was recorded from the 5th row on the floor, and the sound was surprisingly clear and balanced given my closeness to the stage. Given that it was a Saturday-night show, however, there was a lot of drinking of socializing, and that is reflected on the recording (especially the two acoustic songs). I typically feel like you get used to the chatter on most audience recordings, but on this recording I do find it distracting at several points. There are a few mp3 samples included to give you a sense of the overall sound quality to determine whether you want to grab this one. If you don’t mind the occasional audience interference, I think this is actually a very good recording.
