Notes:
Acquired master tape from the JEMS archives. Decent early performance of an up and coming Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers here. The crowd is polite but almost indifferent to them for this performance and that is not surprising considering the opener Cheap Trick played a set that they could just not compete with or follow up on.
I was at this show and the bill was this… Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers opened for Cheap Trick, who were opening for the Runaways. Tom and the boys played a SOLID set, but the Royal Oak Music Theater was a little over half full. Cheap Trick came out and played like their lives depended on it. The Runaways did their set and didn’t return for an encore because the crowd was screaming for Cheap Trick. My understanding is that the Runaways got very upset at being upstaged and changed the opening acts afterwards.
Absolutely a fantastic night!
Thank you for having this show.
