Comments:
Solid TP&HB show from their summer tour with Steve Winwood; this one got underway more than a half-hour late due to technical difficulties, which may have shortened the show by a track or two. Altogether a very solid show before a very appreciative audience; however, the lack of a Petty/Winwood “crossover” (Winwood has typically been joining the Heartbreakers mid-set to play two of his own songs) was a disappointment to me. Standard setlist for this part of the tour, but as always Petty never fails to deliver.
The recording itself is pretty good; I was second row next to the stage, which is normally lethal for a taper. The sound was much better than usual up close due to unusual positioning of overhead speakers that pointed directly down on us; I’m sure it was even better 10 or 15 rows back, but I was very pleased with the recording. Because of rowdy neighbors in my assigned third-row seat, I moved up into the midst of the laminate-wearing “connected” fans in the second row, who were very courteous and quiet throughout the show. Balance and dynamics are pretty good — overall a very listenable recording (probably a B+).
If you’re in a position to catch him on what may be his last major tour, you should definitely make it a point to do so — he’s always great even on an “average” night.
